In 2009, amidst the financial crisis, J. Lee, an experienced professional in the beauty industry, decided to start a brand that would develop various products and services to help salon businesses struggling through tough times. Recognizing that salon businesses, particularly those owned by immigrants and minority women, were particularly affected by the crisis, J. Lee set out to create a brand that would support and empower these business owners. With this goal in mind, J. Lee founded THERAPISPA, a compound word for THERAPY and SPA, representing his vision for a brand that would provide physical and mental wellness to its customers.
