Melatonin is a hormone, and the one primarily responsible for inducing sleep. It is produced by the brain in the evenings, synthesized from serotonin. When ambient light levels drop below a certain threshold, the brain begins to produce melatonin, but can be hindered by the presence of light, and blue light in particular.
When melatonin is produced, it stimulates the production of GABA (Gamma-Aminobutyric acid), another amino acid that the brain produces naturally, but one that helps you stay asleep as opposed to a sleep inducer.
