What it is?
Although Bison once roamed the North American plains from North Mexico to Alaska, they now occupy just a fraction of their original range. These grassland grazers are the largest mammals in north America, measuring up to 10 feet long and weighing around a ton.
History: Overhunting in the 1800s led to Bison being endangered, their numbers dropping from tens of millions into the hundreds. However, intense conservation efforts have brought them back from the brink, and there are now over 20,000 wild Bison in North America, with at least five herds numbering over 1000 animals. Even though no longer in decline, Bison are still considered Near Threatened because all the animals reside in managed conservation areas, and they are dependent on government and management philosophies for continued progress.
