Honey works just as well if not better than store bought rooting hormone and is an eco-friendly method for the urban small space gardener. Just take a healthy cutting (green stem not brown), take an inch or two of the bottom leaves off, dip in honey, and place in soil. Keep it in a warm sheltered spot and keep it well watered. Today I planted potatoes in wire cages! I made them from wire and secured them with zip ties. Then placed on top of cardboard (to prevent weeds) and filled with several inches of straw. Next I placed some compost in, put my seed potatoes in, covered with compost and more straw, and watered thoroughly. Yes. My garden is a hot mess but we are cleaning her up this week! Here’s 4 things to do now: 1. Clean and declutter garden space. This includes cleaning debris such as dead leaves, weeds, and leftover plant material from last season. This helps prevent pests and diseases. 2. Refresh your soil. Aerate soil to promote better root health. Add compost to improve soil structure and boost nutrients. 3. Plant early spring crops. Choose cold-tolerant vegetables such as broccoli, spinach, or lettuce. 4. Start seeds indoors. I’m using seed snails from old jeans in my window sill this year!
